Personal Perspectives
Ruth Ellen Whitt, Executive Director
May 13, 2016/ May 23, 2016

It is my privilege to presently serve as the Executive Director of Leadership Texarkana (LT), with which I have been affiliated in various other roles since completing the flagship annual program in 1989. In the 27 years since, I have led opening retreats for many LT classes and have facilitated numerous Quality of LIfe sessions, and in the process, I have heard firsthand from hundreds of the most committed and connected LT participants from every demographic. For the past six years as LT Executive Director, I have had the truly unique opportunity of annually hearing the leaders in every sector of our community share their perspectives on the state of their industries (whether of healthcare, education, economic development, government, quality of life initiatives, etc), their challenges, along with the opportunities they are pursuing.

Leadership Texarkana Class of 2011

“Leadership” has many definitions depending on what a person’s life perspective is. To me, the embodiment of a perfect leader is Jesus. Leadership is not a dictatorship, it is servanthood. Leadership is serving others and not being served yourself.  There are times that leaders must make hard choices, they seem unpleasant and unpopular. However, leaders must be able to see past their present situation and into the vision of where they want to be five years, ten years, even twenty years down the road. Leaders must be able to make the hard decisions that are for the greater good in the long run. “

One of Many Who Have Chosen to Retire Here

James (Jamie) Bass is no stranger to “leadership” in its many forms. The military has trained the West Monroe native well and helped him make a life-long career out putting leadership into practice.  He retired from the Army in 2011 at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel.  This journey started by his being commissioned through the ROTC program at the University of Louisiana, Monroe and he then entered active duty in 1990.   He served five years as an enlisted soldier with the Louisiana National Guard prior to his active service.  While active he served in a variety of different positions at both the command and staff level throughout his career, culminating to his current leadership role with Red River Army Depot.  Bass assumed the position of Director for Logistics at RRAD this year.  He is responsible for all logistics planning, execution, inventory management and production engineering.
